St. Thomas University Global, the online undergraduate division of St. Thomas University, plans to offer a free May term in 2026, covering the full cost of one course for eligible students as colleges test lower-risk ways to reengage adults without degrees, university officials say.
The term, which begins May 2, will include tuition, fees, books and required materials for a single course, with no upfront cost to students, the university said. The initiative comes as institutions across the U.S. target so-called “some college, no degree” learners, a population numbering in the millions.
The program is open to new, returning and re-engaged students who meet standard admission requirements, according to the university. Because of the condensed format, the term is not eligible for federal financial aid, meaning the university is absorbing the cost rather than relying on traditional aid structures, officials said.

“For many students, the biggest barrier is not ability or motivation, it is the uncertainty around cost,” said Clyde Lewis, associate vice president for financial aid and student services. “This gives students a clear, immediate way to begin without delay and without having to navigate a complex financial decision first.”
The approach reflects a broader shift among colleges experimenting with short-term incentives and trial-style enrollment periods to reduce friction at the point of entry. Whether such programs lead to sustained enrollment or degree completion remains unclear, particularly as retention, not access, is often the larger challenge.
“Higher education often asks students to make a financial commitment before they fully understand the experience,” said Diego Britto, senior vice president for administration and chief financial officer. “This approach reverses that dynamic by allowing students to begin with no financial exposure.”
Courses are delivered fully online with programs in business, finance, marketing, organizational leadership and other fields aimed at working adults, the university said.

St. Thomas University Global is part of St. Thomas University, a Catholic institution accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, according to the university.
While this single free course during the May term is exclusive to its online program, the university itself is physically located in Miami Gardens, Florida.
