Fiji Airways and WestJet partner up to connect Canada and the South Pacific

Travelers flying between Canada and the South Pacific now have more streamlined booking options as international carrier Fiji Airways and Canadian low-cost airline WestJet launch a new codeshare partnership.

Under the new arrangement, Fiji Airways will place its flight code on WestJet flights connecting through major Canadian domestic hubs, including Calgary, Toronto, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Halifax.

In return, WestJet will add its flight code to Fiji Airways services flying from Vancouver to Nadi, Fiji. The agreement also extends to connecting flights across New Zealand, giving Canadian travelers seamless access to Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington.

The airlines expect the partnership to improve connectivity and expand distribution across WestJet’s domestic network.

Company officials noted that passenger traffic between Canada and Fiji has increased by 19 percent year over year. The companies described the move as a way to enhance the onboard experience and provide guests with improved access to destinations across Canada, Fiji and beyond.

Paul Scurrah, managing director and chief executive officer of Fiji Airways, called the arrangement an important step in strengthening global connectivity.

“Canada represents a growing and high-value market for Fiji and the wider Pacific,” Scurrah said in a press release. “This partnership with WestJet makes it easier than ever for Canadian travellers to experience the warmth, culture and natural beauty of Fiji, while also supporting increased visitor flows into our region.”

The growing commercial and tourism ties between the two nations were recently highlighted by the opening of a Canadian High Commission in the Fijian capital of Suva in January, officials said. The diplomatic mission focuses on building economic partnerships and climate resiliency between the regions.

Jennifer Lalonde, high commissioner of Canada to Fiji, stated the aviation partnership supports tourism, trade and people-to-people links that are important to the relationship between the countries.

John Weatherill, WestJet group executive vice president and chief commercial officer, noted that deepening ties with Fiji Airways’ service will make it easier for shared guests to reach their destinations.

“Whether they want to immerse themselves in a new culture, connect with loved ones or explore a path less travelled, together we are creating smoother journeys and more travel memories,” Weatherill said.

The codeshare agreement coincides with an expansion of Fiji Airways’ operations out of Vancouver. Starting June 18, the airline will operate three weekly, year-round flights between Nadi and Vancouver on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. By Sept. 8, the route will transition to using Airbus A350 aircraft to increase capacity.

Fiji Airways and WestJet codeshare explained

A codeshare agreement is an aviation business arrangement where multiple airlines market and share the same flight.

Passengers can purchase a ticket from one airline for a flight operated by a partner airline under a single booking. This allows travelers to check their baggage through to their final destination without needing to recheck it during layovers.

For passengers booking a WestJet coded journey, the agreement also allows them to earn and redeem points on their entire itinerary.

The partnership joins two carriers with significant regional footprints. Founded in 1951, the Fiji Airways group serves 37 destinations across 14 countries and reported bringing in 70 percent of all visitors who flew to Fiji last year, company officials said.

Fiji Airways operates from hubs at Nadi and Suva international airports, providing connectivity to more than 900 destinations worldwide through its membership in the oneworld alliance.

The carrier generated more than $817 million in revenue in 2024, company officials said.

WestJet, meanwhile, is currently celebrating its 30th year of operations.

The airline began operations in 1996 and integrated Sunwing Airlines into its portfolio in 2025. WestJet now employs more than 14,000 people and connects to more than 100 destinations across the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia.

WestJet says it is Canada’s largest vacation provider and leading low-cost airline.
