Amtrak equipment shortage could create crisis for long-distance service

    Travis SchleppBy Travis SchleppAugust 4, 20265 Mins ReadUpdated:August 4, 2026

A meeting of Amtrak executives revealed the dire straits facing the nation’s passenger railroad in the event of any unexpected disruptions.

According to reporting from David Peter Alan of Railway Age, Amtrak is operating with almost no spare equipment, leaving it vulnerable to cascading delays, cancellations and possible service cuts due to weather events, accidents or mechanical failures.

Railroad executives discussed the shortage during a July 29 public meeting of the company’s board of directors, which Railway Age summarized on its website.

Although much of the meeting highlighted Amtrak’s record ridership* and improving financial results, the operational side of the presentation showed the system has little room to absorb unexpected problems.

*Ridership was up 6.8% year over year in fiscal 2026

Executive vice president and chief operating officer Gary Williams told the board that equipment is in “such tight supply” across all service lines that trains must be cleaned, serviced and maintained during increasingly short turnaround periods.

“There is absolutely no extra equipment sitting, should we have any kind of issue and want to swap,” Williams said.

That means a collision with a pedestrian, an accident at a grade crossing, mechanical problem, severe weather event or other disruption could potentially delay an arriving train, which would in turn impact the next trip scheduled to use the same equipment.

Because maintenance work still must be completed, a late arrival can quickly produce a late departure and affect service for the rest of the day.

Williams said the problem is particularly severe on the Northeast Corridor, where a large amount of equipment is turned around daily. Heat-related speed restrictions and extensive construction further reduce Amtrak’s ability to recover from disruptions.

Amtrak equipment shortage could impact long-distance routes

The equipment crisis may pose an even greater threat to Amtrak’s long-distance network, where aging passenger cars are already limiting service.

Amtrak reported that its ability to provide the planned number and type of cars for a train improved from 91% to 92% in fiscal 2026, but that remained well below the 98% recorded in fiscal 2023.

Officials cited missing Amfleet II coaches and food-service cars on eastern long-distance trains, along with Superliner sleeping cars being removed from western routes.

Recent cancellations on the City of New Orleans route showed just how quickly equipment problems can overwhelm service. Williams said the northbound train on this route was canceled 14 times and the southbound train 16 times after inspectors found significant wheel damage. Amtrak replaced 31 wheelsets across three equipment sets, including work in New Orleans, Chicago and Jackson, Mississippi.

“We left a lot of customers stranded due to those cancellations,” Williams said.

Long-distance trains also continue to struggle with reliability. The report showed a record 59% customer on-time performance rate for the service category, but that remained far below its newly established 70% target. Only the Palmetto, City of New Orleans, Lake Shore Limited and Crescent routes met that goal during the third quarter.

In his breakdown of the meeting on Railway Age, Alan said Amtrak is facing various challenges across many parts of its system, from poor infrastructure to equipment issues.

While not all of the problems can be attributed to Amtrak itself, Alan said Amtrak only has itself to blame for others.

“It is no surprise that Amtrak is running short of long-distance equipment. Much of what they have is old and is reaching the end of its useful life,” Alan writes. “[In previous reports] I raised concern about the future of the entire long-distance network, with equipment shortages getting worse and with no relief in sight. Williams’s report to the Board confirmed that the situation is at least as bad as it was when I wrote those reports, and possibly worse.”

Alan warned that Amtrak’s failure to order replacement long-distance equipment earlier could eventually force reduced schedules or the elimination of routes. Even if new cars are ordered soon, they would take years to manufacture and enter service.

“Whether the decline of long-distance services can be attributed to Amtrak’s decisions or mostly to forces beyond Amtrak’s control, the operational result of the severe decline of that network could turn into a strategic disaster for Amtrak, because of the loss of credibility among decision-makers and a loss of confidence on the part of existing or potential riders,” Alan added.
