Marriott International has expanded its luxury brand further into the “Mexican Caribbean” with the opening of a 213-room resort in Costa Mujeres, an emerging tourism enclave located just north of Cancun.
Operating under the company’s high-end St. Regis brand, the St. Regis Costa Mujeres Resort features 163 guestrooms and 50 suites, including premium residential-style accommodations dubbed the Caroline Astor Suite and the Presidential Suite, the company said.
Company officials described the new property in a press release as a “sophisticated new expression of luxury” situated among white sand beaches, protected mangroves and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.
The luxury property is part of a continued push by major hospitality brands to establish a foothold in some secluded areas just outside major tourist destinations, a sentiment echoed by president of Marriott International’s Caribbean and Latin America division Federico Greppi.
“St. Regis has long defined where luxury chooses to be, and Costa Mujeres marks an important next chapter in the brand’s expansion across Mexico,” Greppi said in a news release. “With this opening, we are bringing St. Regis to one of the country’s most sought-after emerging destinations, reinforcing our commitment to growth in the region and the growing appeal of Costa Mujeres as a luxury market.”

Designed by the architectural firm Sordo Madaleno, the glass and concrete structure is positioned near the historic El Meco archaeological site, company officials said, adding that the property’s design is inspired by Mayan mythology and local craftsmanship of the Yucatán Peninsula.
The resort features intricate stonework, sculptural lighting, woven textures and a lobby chandelier that the company says “evokes the movement of the Caribbean Sea and the waters flowing through the region’s sacred cenotes.”
The resort complex includes nine food and beverage outlets that heavily utilize local ingredients with “global technique.”

Specific venues include Costa Coral, an all-day dining restaurant focused on Mexican traditions; Fish Market, which highlights Caribbean seafood; Palmare Grill, a beachside venue; and Shami, a rooftop eatery that fuses Japanese techniques with regional ingredients.
George Fleck, senior vice president and global brand leader for St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, said the brand is extending its luxury heritage to an entirely new setting.
“Today, across our expanding resort portfolio, we honor that legacy by bringing the brand’s signature rituals, refined sense of celebration, and modern glamour to extraordinary locales around the globe,” Fleck said.

The property also offers the brand’s standard butler service, which the company says ensures each stay is “tailored with impeccable attention to detail” under a corporate philosophy it calls “Live Exquisite.”
In addition to lodging and dining, the resort features a spa that offers a thermal circuit, aromatic steam and hydrotherapy experiences. The spa includes 16 treatment rooms and two signature suites equipped with private hot tubs and dedicated relaxation areas. Company officials highlighted a signature sea salt treatment inspired by the region’s ancient history.
Recreational amenities include an oceanfront infinity pool, a fitness center and a kids club. The resort also plans to host daily activities, ranging from traditional afternoon tea and evening champagne sabrage to sunrise ceremonies, traditional craft workshops and ocean excursions that the company says support coral reef restoration.
