A lesser known airport in Southern California is continuing its historic growth trajectory.
This week, officials from Ontario International Airport reported that passenger and cargo traffic continued to rise in February, reflecting sustained growth at one of the state’s busiest mid-sized airports.
The airport reported more than 478,000 passengers traveled through its terminals during the month, a 6.3% increase compared to February last year. The gains were driven largely by international travel, which rose 55.1% to 55,531 passengers, while domestic traffic increased 2.1% to 423,094.

Year to date, passenger volume reached more than 971,000, up 5% from the same period last year. Domestic travel remained essentially flat at 849,708 passengers, while international traffic climbed 60% to 121,812.
“As we approach 10 years of local ownership, ONT has evolved into a gateway that reflects the energy and growth of the Inland Empire and greater Southern California,” said Atif Elkadi, chief executive officer of the Ontario International Airport Authority. “Our focus on accessibility and ease of travel continues to resonate with passengers and airlines alike.”
The airport’s growth extended beyond passenger traffic. Air cargo volumes increased 10.3% in February compared to the same month last year, totaling 66,529 tons. Commercial freight rose 13.3%, while mail shipments declined 5.4%. Year-to-date cargo volumes were up 7.9%, reaching 133,369 tons.
Southwest Airlines accounted for the largest share of passengers in February at 35.4%, followed by American Airlines at 17%, Alaska Airlines at 10.6%, Delta Air Lines at 9% and United Airlines at 8.9%.
Elkadi said the airport’s cargo operations remain a key component of its growth.
“As a top 10 air cargo hub with world-class facilities, we take pride in delivering the first-rate customer service our shipping partners demand when they need it,” he said.
Ontario International Airport serves destinations across the United States, Mexico, Central America and Taiwan. The airport has grown steadily in recent years as airlines expand service in the Inland Empire.
