TSA bomb-sniffing dog named agency’s ‘cutest canine’ for 2026

A bomb-sniffing dog stationed at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport has been named by the Transportation Security Administration as this year’s “Cutest Canine.”

A 3-year-old German shorthaired pointer named Bolt was crowned the agency’s top dog following a nationwide social media contest.

Bolt beat out 84 other TSA canines across the country to win the honor.

His handler, Daphne Wang, said behind Bolt’s grinning, wide-eyed exterior lies an intense worker who is “never short on energy and is always 1,000% excited to go to work,” with everyday at his side feeling like an adventure.

“He is such a character and a hard-working little guy,” Wang said. “I am so happy he gets to show the world his quirky personality … There is nothing ordinary about him. He works hard and plays even harder. He is always in working mode, even at home.”

What do TSA explosive detection dogs do?

Bolt and his brothers and sisters in arms (paws) are trained to detect explosives and respond quickly to safety threats.

“Canine teams train regularly, and handlers learn to read subtle changes in their canine’s behavior including when they detect the scent of an explosive,” the agency says. “If a canine alerts its handler to the presence of an explosive’s odor, the handler follows an established procedure to resolve the alarm with minimal impact to the screening lane.”

Deputy Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill says these canine teams are a vital part of the TSA mission, despite how cute Bolt and his colleagues may appear.

TSA dogs are trained at a dedicated training center in San Antonio, Texas. The program was originally launched in 1972 as a partnership with state and local law enforcement, but was transferred to the TSA following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

They were first deployed by the agency for explosives detection in March 2008, first while screening air cargo and then adding passenger screening to their responsibilities in 2011.

The Cutest Canine Contest was first launched in 2019 as a way to recognize the work of the agency’s canine teams and the strong bonds established between each dog and their respective handler.

Bolt was among four finalists representing different regions across the U.S.; he’s the third GSP to receive the honor within the last four years.

This year’s finalists included Bolt; Ember, a 4-year-old Labrador retriever stationed at Orlando International Airport; Epic, another 4-year-old Labrador retriever who works at Pittsburgh International Airport; and Xaro, a German shepherd station at St. Louis Lambert International Airport who just turned 9 years old.

Officials said the public will be able to download a free 2027 TSA Canine Calendar featuring 12 dogs from this year’s contest later this year. The 2026 calendar is available for download on its website now.

“Explosives detection canine teams are one of TSA’s most effective and visible layers of security,” Transportation Security Administrator David Cummins said. “These highly trained dogs and their handlers help detect threats in dynamic transportation environments, deter potential attacks and give travelers confidence that TSA is using proven, adaptable capabilities to protect the traveling public.”
