A new category of maritime travel is scheduled to debut in 2028 with a vessel described as the “world’s first luxury expedition sailing yacht.”
The vessel is the first of its kind for Atlas Ocean Voyages, a luxury cruise line that currently operates three motorized ships. Company officials said the new yacht, named the Atlas Adventurer, is designed to offer a “new expression of exploration” by combining wind-assisted travel with “residential-style living.”
The cruise line released images Thursday of the interior of the the Atlas Adventurer, which the company says is intended to mimic the “spirit of 1930s liners” while using modern sustainable technology.
The interior design is being led by Oitoemponto, a Portuguese studio. According to a news release, the designers used a “distinctive design language” characterized by “warm modernism” and “material richness.”

The spaces feature a mix of polished marble, high-gloss mahogany, and hand-finished metals. Company officials said the aesthetic is an attempt to reinterpret the “grandeur of classic travel” through a more “intimate, human-scale lens.”
The yacht will operate under an “all-suite philosophy,” according to the company. The 200 accommodations are divided into three tiers: the Signature Collection, Concierge Collection, and an “exclusive enclave” known as the Reserve Collection.

The Reserve Collection features the largest spaces, including two-bedroom “Owner’s Suites” that cover 1,110 square feet. It also includes “Penthouse Suites” at 565 square feet, some of which can be connected to neighboring rooms to create “multi-room residences” for families.

The other collections, Signature and Concierge, offer suites ranging from 290 to 375 square feet, many of which include private verandas or “panorama ocean” views.
What is a ‘luxury sailing yacht?’
Beyond the “understated glamour” of the interiors, company officials said the ship is “purpose-built for responsible exploration.”
The yacht features a carbon-fiber rig and precision sails to maximize wind propulsion. When wind is not available, the ship uses dual-fuel engines and an electric-hybrid system.
A nine-megawatt marine battery will allow for “silent, low-emission cruising” in sensitive environments, according to a news release. To navigate remote areas, the yacht is equipped with a specially designed hull for polar regions and stabilizers designed to keep the ship steady at anchor.
“Atlas Adventurer represents a pivotal step forward for our brand and for expedition travel,” James A. Rodriguez, president and CEO of Atlas Ocean Voyages, said in a news release. “Our continued collaboration with Oitoemponto allows us to create an experience that balances the heritage of ocean travel with the expectations of today’s guest, intimate in scale, advanced in design, and grounded in environmental responsibility.”

The ship is designed to carry 400 guests and 274 crew members. It will sail under the flag of Portugal, joining a fleet that includes the World Navigator, World Traveller, and World Voyager.
The Atlas Adventurer is currently being built. It was announced as the next ambitious project in the cruise line’s future earlier this year.
Reservations for the general public will open June 10. Members of the company’s yacht club can begin booking May 20. Detailed itineraries for the ship’s first expeditions are expected to be released in early May, company officials said.
According to the release, the brand aims to provide “transformative experiences” that connect travelers with “diverse cultures and communities” in remote global destinations.
